1. First, I used a slab of clay to make a cylinder shape and pinched the bottom to create legs, then created texture with carving tools, and finally added a handle.
2. I did my handle in kind of a curved shape by getting a strip of clay, turning it sideways and shaping it the way I wanted it. I had to wait for it to dry out a little bit before I could attach it to the mug. 3. I found the texture to be very successful, but if I could do it again I would make the handle larger. 4. A clay slab is a flat piece of clay.

1. I used the coiling method for my piece. The process was to cut out a circle as the base, then roll strips of clay and score and slip them on top of each other. Once the strip of clay is on the piece, you can pinch it and mold it to where you need it to be.
2. I've been having a really hard time making the top of the bowl even and smoothing out the sides near the bottom of the bowl. I really like how the shape of the bowl is turning out, though. 3. My design has changed a lot since I started. Originally I wanted to make a vase shape that curved out a little bit. However, l noticed during the process that the sides were going out a little more than I wanted them to, but it would make a really nice bowl. 1. I think the cylinder stamp with texture from a random object is going to work the best because from testing other stamps I noticed that cylinder stamps seemed to work the best, and because the texture shows up really well on that particular stamp.
2. I think the cube stamp may have issues because when I tried to press the object with the texture in, it didn't show up very well and the lines aren't very deep. 3. The cube was the most difficult to make because every time I tried to press and object into the clay, the clay flattened out. 4. The sphere was the easiest to create because I was able to roll the clay out with my hands and the carving on the stamp was fairly simple. Vanessa Hogge sculpts vessels and wall decor from her studio in Cockpit Arts Holborn in London. The vessels are covered in many petals made of porcelain and black clay and can take between a few hours and a few weeks to create. She is inspired by Frida Kahlo, Indian miniature paintings and Marianne North. Her work inspires me because her pieces have so much detail and it would be incredibly difficult to create such detail in her pieces without possibly affecting another part of the piece. 1. The sphere stamps that were well rounded out worked very well, however in some of the stamps, the patterns were not carved very deeply so the pattern wasn't portrayed very well when the stamp was used.
2. I think the practice will influence the way I make my own stamps because I know that the stamps I make need to be well rounded out and carved carefully. |
